LEAD Profile
LEAD is a Zimbabwean registered non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to building and or restoring the dignity of disadvantaged groups and or communities in Zimbabwe through sustainable livelihood options and appropriate economic mitigation initiatives. The organization was established in 2004 as an exit strategy of USAID Zimbabwe funded economic mitigation program “LEAD Program” implemented by a US consulting firm, DAI, during 2000 – 2005.
To attain a high level of competence, LEAD is managed by some of the highly qualified and experienced staff in the country with an intimate knowledge of humanitarian and development issues in the country.
The organization mainly focuses on: 1) Building and strengthening community resilience, 2) Enterprise and agribusiness development for poverty alleviation, 3) Nutrition and Health, 4) Youth, HIV and AIDS, through market-driven agribusiness and enterprise development models that seek to commercialize and transform operations and lives of non poor people or communities.
LEAD has proven track record in managing and implementing humanitarian, recovery and transitional development programs in Zimbabwe. Over the past 15 years, LEAD has improved lives and livelihoods of more than 800,000 rural and urban households through improved food security, nutrition and income earning opportunities.
The organization is known for developing innovative programs with sustainable impacts that carry on after the conclusion of donor funded activities. For example, the concept of the Household Nutrition Gardens, first introduced by USAID/DAI program in Zimbabwe early in 2000, was promoted by LEAD through USAID funding in 2004 to benefit mission hospitals, orphanages and old peoples’ homes. This program benefited not only participating institutions to generate much needed revenues but also benefitted people affected and/living with HIV and AIDS, and vulnerable local communities through improved nutrition and support to sustainable local economic development efforts.
Through funding from United States Agency Development Foundation (USADF), LEAD strengthened farmer associations and community-based organizations that are currently productive, facilitating access to inputs and services to their members, linking members to local and export markets, and lobbying and advocating for its members for favourable and conducive business environment.
